Doran Contractors
Limited has a rich and varied history in General Contracting.
Among our credits are more than 25 transitway stations and bridges
and 13 sewage and water treatment facilities of varying size
and design. Though the resume includes a multitude of interesting
projects, below are a few that are particularly noteworthy.
Plaza Bridge Reconstruction
Value: $ 17 800
000
A 100 year old
bridge reconstruction with new roads and landscaping, reconstruction
and the rebuilding of the services building. The project is
located at the junction of Elgin, Wellington and Sussex in front
of the Chateau Laurier. It involved a complex historical restoration
as well as the restoration and modification of the existing
heritage structures. Doran dealt with a large number of stakeholders
including the Regional Municipality of Ottawa-Carleton, Public
Works, Parks Canada, various heritage groups and the National
Capital Commission.
Centre
Block Underground Services Building
Value:
$ 11 300 000
This
project involved the construction of a two storey below grade
structure adjacent to and in part below the Centre Block on
Parliament Hill in Ottawa. A significant challenge to the project
was the completion of the massive rock removal to the heritage
structure during the summer recess. The structure consists of
a heavily reinforced concrete frame which will house the new
electrical distribution for Parliament Hill, communication centres,
workshops and storage spaces. This project had very sensitive
historical considerations. Careful mapping of each stone was
required. Boring of ten feet diameter tunnel through the rock
under the building and the blasting adjacent to the building
required detailed sophisticated monitoring. There was a heavy
involvement with heritage groups.
Sludge Thickening
and Dewatering Facility
Value: $ 40 000
000
Project Description:
The Sludge Thickening and Dewatering Facility is the central
component of the Regional sewage management operation, called
the Robert O. Pickard Environmental Centre on Shefford Road
in Ottawa East. The equipment included 13 centrifuges, costing
$1 million each, to be used for thickening waste activated sludge.
In addition, 8 350-h.p. boilers were installed, burning either
natural gas or gas generated from the digesters, to supply both
process heat and central heat for the site. The building's structure
utilized precast and curtain wall construction over structural
steel and reinforced concrete.
